Behemoths

Steve S.
How and when were you introduced to Behemoth?
I’m just a city boy, born and raised in south Detroit, who took the midnight train going anywhere. Seriously though, I am a husband, an animal lover, a business owner and a comic book fanatic. The only thing better than a good Marvel movie is a Bears or Cardinal game. To be honest, being a boy from a small town in Iowa I had to pretty much make my own excitement. As the youngest of four, I spent a lot of time reading and writing…. And getting into trouble. I moved to Houston about 20 years ago. My beautiful wife and I have been married for almost 13 years. Although we haven’t been blessed with any offspring yet, we have a bunch of little fur babies to call our own. Our house is basically Noah’s Ark with a foundation and a fence. I own Blue Ribbon Roofing which I started almost 10 years ago. Something most people wouldn’t expect to hear about me is that I have written a manuscript, which is an unpublished novel.
Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself or something that would surprise us.
About a year ago my office manager, Kirsty and I were looking for something to challenge ourselves as well as expand our lifestyle and fitness goals. As usual, Kirsty told me what we were doing and where we were going. We somehow passed the interview with Aja, again most likely due to Kirsty, and we’ve been here ever since.
What are you most proud of, physically, mentally or both since beginning with us?
Physically I would say the gains I have made in flexibility and balance with your collective guidance, including a lot of yelling from Leah. It’s night and day from where I started. Mentally I would say just committing to coming consistently, which is made much easier by the coaches and the community that you all have built.
What has been your biggest, yet most rewarding obstacle to overcome, whether in the gym or on your health journey to date?
Again I would have to say flexibility. I physically couldn’t get into many of the positions I can today because of you guys. Now I am thinking of opening a yoga studio. Just kidding, but thanks guys!
Why Behemoth?
The coaching staff and the community. I find it remarkable that you are able to come up with group exercises given the variety of skill levels in any given class. Not just by scaling the workouts by giving us different options, but you all are able to help each individual tweak their movements or guide us to the right workout. Oh and you actually seem to care about us. Again, pretty remarkable stuff guys.
What next? What are you excited about pursuing here in the future?
I am eager to get some of the more complex moves: Olympic lifts, kipping pullups and what not. One foot in front of the other though right. Maybe I should work on getting the elbow warmup moves down first.
“3, 2, 1…Go” Mad Lib section
-My favorite lift (movement) is…
Pull up. It is just you against the bar and they look so easy but yet they are so hard.
-My most frequent class I come to is…
9:30
-I have always wanted to…
Fill up the Olympic size swimming pool in my mansion with $100 bills and go swimming in that bitch like Scrooge McDuck. Still working on the pool, the mansion and the $100 bills. It’s called a dream people.
-When I’m not crushing weights, my favorite thing to do is…
Read, write and watch movies. Love me some good comic book movies and dare I forget my beloved Bears and Cardinals.
-If I could make ANY of the Behemoth coaches do 100 burpees it would be…
Aryan, Aja and Leah would make it look all too easy and just make me feel bad about myself as a human being. Especially Leah, she just had a baby for God’s sake. I already lost money challenging Jonathan to a bunch of burpees so he’s out. Cam could step on me and not even know it. Pass. Johnny’s got a lot on his plate so I’d feel bad. Let’s go with Damian.
-Favorite “application of fitness” outside of the gym is…
Playing with my dogs and posing heroically on roofs while saving Houston one home at a time.
-Favorite band/genre/Pandora station to workout to is…
Rock and roll man
-Beast mode engaged when this song comes on…
Maggie’s Farm. I am not sure it gets much better than Rage Against the Machine covering Bob Dylan. It’s one of the best damn the man songs ever. I am not sure what that says about me being self employed and all, but here we are.

Luan T.
Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself or something that would surprise us.
I’m a proud family man that is madly in love my wife and 2 little girls. I grew up in Alief and have been in TX since I was 1. I’m a recovering sneaker head and I’m trying to break the habit. I love sports in general and my favorite sport is Basketball. I’m all in (all the H-Town teams)!
How and when were you introduced to Behemoth?
My good friend (Rene Vasquez) told me about Behemoth when he and his wife did a Saturday class. He bought it for her birthday. I couldn’t get it out of my head that I needed to head on over and check it out, so one day I finally mustered up the courage to set up an appointment to check it out.
What are you most proud of, physically, mentally or both since beginning with us?
I’m most proud of the way my thinking has changed since coming here. I think the mental hurdle is the hardest to get over. You never know what you can achieve if you don’t try!
Why Behemoth?
The way this place makes me feel is hard to describe. It’d be hard for another gym to replicate. The fact that every one cares about each other and how the coaches really care about you as a person goes a long way in my book. It’s not just a training session to me. It’s become a way of life.
What next? What are you excited about pursuing here in the future?
I’m really excited to see what this next year brings. My ultimate goal is to be able to do every movement RX. I know that’s a big goal and I’m going to keep working towards it.

Cass and Byron
Cass and Byron are quite the powerhouse couple! They set some very specific goals when they started their journey with us and have proceeded to crush every single one of them, and then some. They continue to set the bar high and also lead by example for their children. It’s been awesome to watch their journey thus far and we know this is only the beginning for these two!
Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself or something that would surprise us.
Byron – I was born and raised in Southern Louisiana, moved to Texas in 2000
Cass – Born and raised in Houston. I met Byron in 2001, and after he consistently stalked me we went on a date on Valentine’s Day at Macaroni Grill. (Lol.) We started a family very young (21 & 22 yo); committing to the fact that we were parents to a beautiful baby girl we took on tough responsibilities and purchased our home at 25 and 23 years old. We now have been married for 12 years and have two awesome kids; Chloe – 15 and Bj – 11.
Byron – I work as a package car driver for UPS, aka the real Santa Claus; roughly covering about 30,000 steps a day.
Cass – I have worked for a large healthcare system going on 15 years and working towards my BBA in Healthcare Administration.
How and when were you introduced to Behemoth?
Cass –In August 2017, I knew something needed to change in my life. Life was so busy with kids, work and school that my health took the back seat. I set-up one-on-one with Leah Barto and went from there.
Byron – We’ve always known about Behemoth and Aja since back in the day at our old box.
What are you most proud of, physically, mentally or both since beginning with us?
Cass – I’m most proud of being consistent with lifestyle changes; I have lost 23 pounds and continue to see positive changes mentally and physically. I have become consistent in being prepared and creative with clean meals and snacks for the family. I cut-out alcohol in January, that was the easy; chocolate – that’s a different story! We have cut down on eating out drastically. The days of conveniently going through Taco bell, Whataburger or Mc D’s drive-thru are non-existent.
Byron – I’m most proud of gaining new friends and family since joining Behemoth. I’m also now more in tune with my body, individual capabilities, and overall nutrition, which has never really happened all at once.
Why Behemoth?
Byron – Well, as stated before, we were aware of Behemoth years ago, but once Cass joined and I realized how excited she was about the overall experience, I knew I had to get signed up asap, Thanks Cass!!
Cass- The Behemoth community and coaches hold a high standard. They are consistent with helping you become the best version of yourself. The coaches press the members to have intention behind every movement; even a warm-up! I am never concerned about injury because of the attention we get; the coaches know your progress well enough to scale you down or up. We have met some awesome people who make working out so much more fun. Our normal class is 5am, and I would say it’s a special group! LoL.
What next? What are you excited about pursuing here in the future?
Byron – I’m excited about continuing relationships with the Behemoth family, getting the most out of my body and capabilities, and helping as many people as I can to achieve a healthier lifestyle. I’m also excited about using training that I’m getting at Behemoth to participate in local CrossFit competitions. And also since I enjoy participating in Spartan races, the training really keeps me pushing myself harder to get a better time and eventually compete on the elite level.
Cass – I’m excited about building weight on cleans and S2OH. Along with staying consistent with healthy lifestyle choices so my kids could take this learned behavior and carry it on into their own lives.
“3, 2, 1…Go” Mad Lib section
–My favorite lift (movement) is…
Byron – pull-ups (all varieties)
Cass – tire drags
–My most frequent class I come to is…

–I have always wanted to…
Byron – Spartan Ultra Beast in Hawaii
Cass – go to Hawaii…hehe!

Byron – contemplate on when I get to crush weights again!?!?.
Cass – Costco trips are my jam! Watching LivePD , getting the kids off the electronics to go outdoors
–Favorite “application of fitness” outside of the gym is…
Cass – Adulting, j/k! Any physical activity or new adventure with the family, I’ve done a Spartan Sprint – that was fun!

Rick R.
Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself or something that would surprise us.
My name is Rick Rivas. I’m from El Paso, TX, but have lived in NM, Alaska, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Kansas, and now Houston. I graduated from Oklahoma State University with a Bachelors in Accounting, and am now an Area Manager for Saratoga Homes. I grew up playing baseball, and have been drafted twice by the Colorado Rockies and Pittsburgh Pirates. I had a brief Minor League career that started and ended with the Los Angeles Dodgers. These experiences have shaped who I am today and how I view people and business. I can be a very intense individual that is strong willed. I do not accept failure and complacency, nor settle for it. On the other extreme I can be a goofball and like to have fun and enjoy life.
I am married to my beautiful wife Martha, who I met in Houston. She is definitely my better half who puts life into perspective for me when I get too intense. We have an 8th month year old son named Ricardo Cruz Rivas aka Ricky Cruz. I also can’t forget my two fur babies Bailey (GSD) and Bleu (Chocolate Lab).
What I have learned about life and business is you have to have a ‘WHY?’ In my opinion, this is the driving force behind individuals who seek to be the best version of themselves that they can be. I am blessed to say that my little family is my ‘WHY?’
Fun fact: I was chased by a Grizzly Bear in Alaska and survived to tell you about it.
How and when were you introduced to Behemoth?
I was doing CrossFit at another box in old Katy. The drive time was a little longer than I would like. I realized I was always stressing to make class on time because the drive was not ideal to my busy work schedule. I drove by Behemoth on my way to lunch one day and dropped in.
What are you most proud of, physically, mentally or both since beginning with us?
I would say my core strength. It was one of my goals when I first started with Behemoth. I am not satisfied where I am at but am happy about the progress. I have noticed that it is easier to breathe during intense workouts, which allows me to go heavier and harder. It has been a long journey with my core.
Why Behemoth?
Honestly, I had experienced some health issues before I joined Behemoth. I have a demanding job and I didn’t make health a priority. I knew I had been lacking on the nutrition side and didn’t know where to begin to make a change. I knew I needed help from someone who is knowledgeable to help guide me in the right direction. Leah was my coach and the first person I talked to when inquiring about Behemoth. After our first meeting, I knew that Behemoth’s values and mission aligned with what I had been searching for. Nutrition was my top priority and I wanted to know where to begin researching, reading, and experimenting with what I ate. What amazed me was that all the coaching staff’s knowledge on nutrition and sleep. Plus, they sent me reputable web links, books, and podcast to research for myself. Over the past year and a half, I have learned a lot about nutrition. I am grateful to have a coaching staff that is willing to help you in any way, to achieve your personal goals.
What next? What are you excited about pursuing here in the future?
I still have the same goals as when I started that I need to achieve and perfect. I look forward to achieving them in the near future. If anything, I would say that I need to pursue being more disciplined in my approach to achieve these goals.
“3, 2, 1…Go” Mad Lib section
–My favorite lift (movement) is…all gymnastic movements I can’t do unscaled…yet (strict muscle-ups, hand stand pushups, hand stand walks)
–My most frequent class I come to is… Shout out to my 5:00am crew!!
–I have always wanted to…do 30 strict pull ups.
–When I’m not crushing weights, my favorite thing to do is…spend time with my family, and golf.
–Favorite “application of fitness” outside of the gym is…carrying my son in his car seat doing alternating farmer carries. You’d be surprised how much an 8 month old weighs.
–Favorite Pandora station…lately it has been “Ke$ha Radio” and “Classical Music For Your Baby Einstein Radio”

Ron H.
Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself or something that would surprise us.
Ron Handley, I am 48 years old, originally from Ohio. As a child, my father was in the Air Force, so my family moved around every four years. I have lived in Texas since 1983 so I consider myself a Texan since I’ve been here longer than anywhere else. My beautiful wife Jeana and I have three boys, nine-year-old twins Jake and Dane and our seven-year-old, Grayson. As some of you know, I am a dentist. Terrifying to some, I am a pretty easy going guy. I’ve had had my own practice on Barker Cypress for over 15 years now.
How and when were you introduced to Behemoth?
I have always tried to involve myself in athletics since I was a kid. High school sports in the 80’s, intramural sports in dental school in the 90’s. Things started to slow down a little as I got into my career and family. I felt like I had tried just about every work out style out there, but boredom would soon sabotage my interest and I’d find myself on the couch again. As I got into my 40’s, I started getting into some injuries. Complete rotator cuff tear, sciatica, foot pain, etc. It was frustrating and I found myself really pushing into depression. I wanted to get involved into a program where I could focus on core strength and flexibility but was afraid of further injury. In the summer of 2016, my wife and I decided to give CrossFit a try. We toured a couple boxes that just seemed to throw you straight into it. When we stumbled into Behemoth it really was what I needed. Personalized instruction into movements that I really had no experience with. This allowed me to develop confidently at my own pace.
What are you most proud of, physically, mentally or both since beginning with us?
My flexibility really is something that has come a long way. I have always spent a lot of time stretching before and after workouts. But I’ve learned not only how to stretch for prevention but how to stretch when injury or soreness is coming.
What next? What are you excited about pursuing here in the future?
I feel like I’m just scratching the surface. Right now I’m focusing on just building my strength and continuing with my conditioning. I’m also really enjoying the community, the camaraderie and the fitness. I have a lot of fun up here.

Mike B.
Meet Mike, our I am Behemoth for the month of January! Mike is one of the most motivated individuals you will ever meet and he brings energy with him every time he walks in to the gym. We can’t think of a better way to kick of 2018 than by sharing the story of his health and fitness journey below.
Who are you?
Mike Berube – Age 46. I am a proud husband and father to 3 girls. I am blessed with the opportunity to stay home with my girls and be part of their everyday lives and routine. Something that may surprise some is that I once weighed 240 lbs and prior to joining Behemoth, I had not worked out since high school football. I enjoy volunteering my time as a mentor and whenever people need a helping hand. A big change to my life came when I met my wife Kelly. She is an amazing cook and has read almost every nutrition book out there. Prior to our marriage, I drank 6 Dr. Peppers a day and ate fast food at every meal. Life these days is way different. I couldn’t be happier. Being a role model for my girls and around for the next 50 years is my priority now.
How were you introduced to Behemoth?
Fall of 2016 at my kid’s bus stop. I asked Leslie and Ryan Owens what they did to stay in shape and look so fit. Behemoth was the answer. I started the following week and have never looked back.
What are you most proud of physically, mentally or both?
Mentally – I have learned I can take on anything. I used to question myself about a posted workout for that day, not knowing if I would be able to accomplish it. Then I would look over and watch Les and Marilyn crush it. They helped me realize you can do anything you put your mind to.
Physically – I could only do 1 or 2 pull-ups and dips when I joined. Now I do them by the handfuls with ease.
Why Behemoth?
Something about it just spoke to me. I believe it was the Bartos and the community of all of you that made the difference.
What next?
Just show up to the gym tomorrow and tomorrow’s tomorrow. I don’t set goals. I know that sounds crazy, but it adds to much stress. I am task driven. Put something in front of me, let me accomplish that, and then on to the next thing. I like to keep it simple, life’s easier that way.

Sage and Jim B.
Meet Sage and Jim, our I am Behemoth/BSHEmoth duo for the month of December. You can almost always find these two either working out, having fun or playing with their pups! They have a strong dedication towards health and fitness and share that passion with their own personal training community that they have built. These high school sweethearts turned gym rats make the perfect pair! Read more about their story below.
Who are you? Tell us a little something about yourself.
We are Sage and Jim Braddock; natives to Louisiana, but have proudly called Texas home for the last ten years. We’re both from Monroe and while just teenagers, we meet and started dating. 16 years later, we’re happily married and on this journey of life together.
JIM: I wasn’t big on attending class while in high school and soon found myself at a military academy in South Louisiana. After graduation, it was clear that I needed more stability, so at just 17 years of age I found myself standing on top of yellow footprints at Parris Island. In May of 2004, I landed in Iraq with 1st Battalion 2ndMarines as an infantryman. It was tough sledding to say the least and on Oct 27, 2004, I was struck in my face and eyes by shrapnel from an IED blast. Unable to continue my service, I returned to Louisiana and decided to give school another shot. I attended a trade school and received an electrical degree. Today, I work as a Senior Electronics Technician in the oil and gas industry and have done so for 10 years.
SAGE: I have 3 sisters: Babbette, Maurie, and Ainsela (poor dad, he had all girls haha). 1 older, 2 younger, and they all live in Monroe except for Maurie, who lives in Arizona. I was born in New Orleans, but raised in Monroe. I called Louisiana my home up until 2008. I moved to Texas right after I graduated college, but my first move was to Dallas. After living in Dallas for a year, I relocated to Houston to live with Jim. I’ve had several different jobs while living here, but finally found my passion when I became a certified personal trainer. Jim and I both own a personal training business called Braddock Fitness.
How and when were you introduced to Behemoth?
We transformed our third car garage into Braddock Fitness, a home gym where Sage offers one-on-one personal training sessions. While looking for equipment providers, we came in contact with Fitness Depot Houston and meet with Lee McLaren and Matt White. After fixing us up with some pretty amazing gym equipment, Lee asked us if we’ve ever tried Cross Fit. Our answer was no, but have several friends that do it. He told us about Behemoth and said we needed to check them out, so we did
What are you most proud of since beginning with us?
JIM: I’ve had a lot of positive changes since beginning with Behemoth. My mind is sharper, my physique is fitter, and it’s because I bought into the program. The lessons I’ve learned about diet and working out from the coaches have been tremendous for me. I’m proud of myself for putting in the time and being disciplined enough to stay focused on my goals.
SAGE: I had a strong base prior to Behemoth. I strength trained several times a week while also taking advanced HIIT and spin classes. However, Cross Fit definitely takes strength to a whole other level and I’m proud to say that Behemoth has helped me become the healthiest and be in best shape of my life. Barbell snatches, overhead squats, and squat cleans were definitely not apart of my workout programs!
Why Behemoth?
Well, a year ago it was just about trying something new and Behemoth was the name of the gym. Now, Behemoth is our second family. The coaching staff is impeccable and every person at Behemoth inspires us. We feel so fortunate to have been introduced and to be apart of this community.
What’s Next?
JIM: I’m excited to continue growing in CrossFit and becoming capable of participating in The Open “Rx.”
SAGE: I’m also excited to see how strong I can get with Crossfit, while also learning more about the sport. I plan on becoming a certified BirthFit Coach in February when Behemoth holds the workshop. And who knows, I might even get my Level 1 coaching certification to have more education for my personal training business (if Behemoth holds a workshop for that too ).

JIM:
-My favorite movements are: Double unders and muscle-ups
-I attend: The daily 09:30 classes
-I have always wanted to: Be able to take Sage with me when I travel to exotic places. My hope is that one day I will.
-When I’m not doing cross fit: I fill my days with home projects and yoga.
-My favorite Pandora station: I don’t listen to many Pandora or Amazon stations because my personal playlists are usually more boss…haha. When I’m working out and southern Hip Hop comes on…I get that bounce in my shoulders, that extra push; it’s time to through down.
-Beast mode engaged when this song comes on: “Can’t Hold Us” by Macklemore. Something about this track triggers a mental stimulant within me and it’s game on!!
SAGE:
-Favorite lift is: Power cleans
-Frequent class I come to is: 9:30am
-I have always wanted: Jim to take me to Costa Rica, so I can drink water from a blue zone. (It’s a part of Costa Rica where people live longer. There’s a book about it called “The Blue Zones”).
-When I’m not crushing weights, my favorite thing to do is: Train clients and help them succeed in their Braddock Fitness Program. Also, cuddling with my dogs (and Jim).
-Favorite “application of fitness” outside the gym is: To see how many grocery bags I can carry from the car into the house.
-Favorite Pandora station: well I don’t listen to Pandora, but I do listen to Amazon Music. And I don’t really have a favorite station because I listen to so many. I guess it depends on what kind of mood I’m in and what the workout is. It can be anywhere from alternative to hip hop to 90’s jams.
-Beast mode engaged when this song comes on: “Wipe Me Down” by Lil Boosie. Throw that song on any day and it’s guaranteed to put more pep in my step haha.

–Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself or something that would surprise us.
I am a father of 3 young (adult) sons Christopher, Andrew and Adam. I have one still living with me so not quite an empty nester, but I’m in no rush. I was born and raised in San Antonio which is where my family still lives. I am the youngest of 4 children and something I’d like to share is that my parents had me when they were a little up there in age…. My pops was 55 years old and my mom was 44 years old when I was born. I have been in the oil drilling business for 23 years and I lived in Lafayette, LA for 8 years (Andrew and Adam were born there) then moved to Houston in 2002.
Over the years, I’ve watched all my sons participate in various sports such as basketball, football, roller hockey, soccer and track. I’ve even coached basketball and soccer which I was grateful for since I was away about half the time for work while my sons were growing up. I’ve always been a happy-go-lucky kind of fella, meaning I never watched what I ate (well I watched what I ate) but I never paid any mind to it. Heck, working offshore on a drilling rig I knew what day it was cause seafood day was Fridays, steak day was Saturdays and fried chicken was Sundays, so I didn’t miss many meals – and I haven’t even gotten to the pastries such as pecan pie, apple pie, etc. There was a saying I emulated which was “I ate till I got sleepy and I slept till I got hungry.” What a life? Needless to say I got up to a biscuit over 300lbs and the doctor told me I needed to lose weight or I’d likely be facing obesity, heart disease or diabetes (or all the above). Since my cholesterol was slightly high (220), I was fortunate that my doctor never prescribed any medications to lower it. Instead, he preferred I go on a diet and move, so in 2008 I started working out again. This was the first time I worked out regularly since high school (Class of 87) so it had been a long time. I worked as a drilling consultant which meant I worked from project to project, so my office locations changed several times and wherever I’d end up I’d look for the closest gym to join so I could work out during lunch. I was a member at Downtown YMCA (barbell, TRX classes), Houston City Club (Body pump, spin), and Lifetime Fitness (Insanity, spin), and while getting back into the groove at the gym, I tried several diets but I always gained back the weight. I did not gain back all the weight though, because the most successful diet for me (may not have been the healthiest diet) was Quick Weight Loss Center. Part of the reason that diet partially worked is because I dropped a lot of money at the place so I figured I better not waste it. I went from 310lbs to 240lbs and I thought I had it all figured out, so I never went back for the maintenance part of the program. Next thing I knew Thanksgiving and Christmas rolled around, and in my neighborhood that is tamale season, so I gained back 30lbs and I’ve generally stayed that weight for the last several years. Did I mention I grew up in San Antonio?? Because the staple parts of our diet from S.A. is barbacoa and Big Red soda.
–How and when were you introduced to Behemoth?
I live close to Behemoth so I’d driven passed it several times, but I was always a little intimidated. I wasn’t sure if I could do the workouts. Actually, I didn’t know much about CrossFit until I met a friend that was a member. She told me that the coaches were helpful and she also mentioned the workouts lasted anywhere from 5 minutes to 20 or 30 minutes. At the time I was doing the Insanity classes which is 45 minutes or so of cardio so I figured I can do this. I joined the On-Ramp class in December 2014 and I haven’t looked back since……
–What are you most proud of, physically, mentally or both since beginning with us?
I am never one to say that I feel my age, but prior to joining Behemoth, I literally felt my age. Whenever I’d get up from sitting, either at the office or from a recliner, I was achy and crickety. My joints ached and I was popping Glucosamine for the joint pain. Heck, if I dropped something on the floor it was a chore to get down and pick it up. I was like the Tin Man from Wizard of Oz needing a little grease in my joints to get to moving comfortably. When I joined Behemoth my squat was a ¼ of what it is now and a front squat was not possible. I started out using the KB for the front squats. Working on my flexibility was a priority for me (and still is). Today my squat is much better and I’ve graduated to using the barbell for front squats. I still have room for improvement, but I am most grateful that the coaches have taken the time to not only warm us up prior to our workout, but they’ve shown me other stretches I can do improve my mobility outside of class. I no longer fret when I’ve got to pick something up, I feel fine after driving from Cypress to downtown (sometimes almost an hour ride) and I can get out of the car. I feel great!
Lastly, I’m most proud that I finally get it……I figured out the fountain of youth. I am eating cleaner, I am a teetotaler (I was a social drinker as some may know), I am getting my sleep…good sleep and I feel much better getting through the workouts. All this has definitely helped me get over the mental aspect of completing some of our workouts because there was a time when I’d dread the run or the burpees, but now I just get it done. Overall, I’m feeling great!!
–Why Behemoth?
This is easy and it is all because of the Barto’s (now that includes Leah) and the Behemoth community. The coaches have been persistent with educating me on what I need to do to lead a healthier lifestyle (nutrition, sleep, stress, community). For the better part of 2 years I’d listen and work on eating better, then I’d fall off the wagon. Somehow I reasoned that if I had a good workout….heck I deserve that cheeseburger, and I deserve them hot Buffalo wings with blue cheese. Finally, in June of this year for some reason I decided to read a book that had been sitting on my shelf for over a year titled “Eat Fat to Get Thin” by Dr. Hyman, and I audible booked “Wired to Eat”. Those 2 books reiterated what the coaches had been preaching so I decided that I wanted to get healthier not just for me, but to set an example for my sons so hopefully for them it will not take half their life knowing what I know now. I love the coaches for helping me, and for their persistence and for telling me what I needed to hear. Since I work downtown, I have pondered moving closer to work, but now I am staying in this area because of them. I’ll deal with the drive because Behemoth is a part of my circle…….my family.
Also, I have met some great friends in our community. It is great to be around self-motivated individuals. I am most appreciative that everyone accepts me even though I’m Cowboys and Spurs fan.
–What next? What are you excited about pursuing here in the future?
Since I’ve started my journey to a healthier lifestyle in late June of this year I have lost 25lbs. I am going to continue this journey and my goal is to lose another 25lbs. Also, I look forward to becoming more proficient at double unders, overhead squats and at some point I’ve got to do a pull up (Unassisted).

Ruben M.
Ruben has an incredible story of transformation, both in health and fitness. After gaining a lot of extra weight, not managing his lifestyle well and receiving some not so good news about his then current health conditions, he decided that he must commit to change. Since the day he walked in to Behemoth, he has been consistent, pushed through discomfort, and has transformed into a healthier, fitter and more confident version of himself . We are blown away by Ruben’s progress and excited share more about him below!
Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself or something that would surprise us.
My name is Ruben Melendez, I am 45 years old. I am originally from Mexico, but grew up in west Texas. I moved to Houston about five years ago because of the great healthcare career opportunities in the city of Houston. I work at MD Anderson Cancer Center as a nurse practitioner. I am a nocturnal person and have worked night shift over 20 years, which does not offer many benefits to my health, but I love working night shift. I have tried to be a normal day worker, but my body does not like it.
How and when were you introduced to Behemoth?
Three years ago I decided to make big changes to my lifestyle. I was the heaviest I had ever been, was up to 260lbs and started to have the health issues accompanied by obesity. I had been diagnosed with hypertension 10 years before but kept it well controlled with exercise. When I went back to graduate school my fitness regimen took the back burner and I slowly gained a lot of weight and developed bad habits. My blood pressure got out of control and the doctor told me I either needed more medication or to make some lifestyle changes.
After that conversation with my doctor I decided to make some lifestyle changes, I began watching my diet and running consistently. With some discipline and consistency the weight started coming off and I was able to increase my weekly mileage drastically. I realized that since I was not doing any other form of exercise, I ended up with an injury. My chiropractor suggested I do some strength training and that’s how I ended up at Behemoth. I had heard about CrossFit, but many of the people I knew had different opinions about it. I looked around and ended up at Behemoth and from the first day I walked in this place I felt like I belonged here.
I had never done any kind of strength work in my life. I had no clue how to lift or do any of the complex skill work we do here at Behemoth, but Aja, Aryan and Leah took me in and immersed me into this great CrossFit community. Their approach to bringing new people into the Behemoth community is not only professional but very well thought out. They really focus on helping you be successful.
What are you most proud of, physically, mentally or both since beginning with us? Why Behemoth?
It is not hard for me to describe how I feel since I joined Behemoth. The changes I have seen in my body and the way I feel is incredible. I never imagined exercise could make you feel so good. Although I was running a lot of miles before I started CrossFit, I still felt tired all the time. My runs were rough, I remember especially after my long runs that I would need at least 2 days rest. After I joined Behemoth and showed up consistently, my energy levels increased dramatically and my runs became so easy that I enjoyed them even more. I have had my best run times since starting CrossFit and I can run a half marathon and still feel so good during and afterwards.
What next? What are you excited about pursuing here in the future?
One of my goals is to continue to grow and become more skilled in the sport of CrossFit. I plan to make this a permanent part of my life for as long as I live. Being part of the Behemoth community has given me many positive changes to my life and I now know that you can do and accomplish anything as long as you put some effort into it.

Richard & Christine C.
Richard and Christine are our I AM BEHEMOTH’s for the month of May! The energy and dynamic that these two bring to our Behemoth community is infectious. Both of them are extremely consistent and have been fun to watch as they have grown into better, stronger and smarter versions of themselves.
Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself or something that would surprise us.
[Richard] – I was born in Malaysia. Growing up in England I played rugby, football (international edition) and yes Cricket. I enjoyed sports greatly but am more inclined towards fine food and drink. Christine and I met in Beijing and we lived in England until 2001. We were transferred by my employer to Houston in 2001, moved to Michigan in 2003 and then returned to Houston in 2007.
[Christine] – My name is Christine Chong, I am a wife and I am a proud mom of James and Olivia, they are 14 and 9 years old respectively.
I was born premature, allergies run in my family I was always sick and lacked energy. As such, my parents decided I would skip any sporting activities – my memory of my school years was a lot of sitting, sitting in class, sitting at home, sitting in the shade while the rest of the class participated in P.E.
After my daughter Olivia was born, I started doing yoga and running, my body was impaired from the pregnancies with bad posture, I was experiencing severe lower back pain and foot pain, one of my yoga friends introduced a local chiropractor to me. He pointed out the MRI image of my lumbar discs and told me frankly that I needed to start doing some weight training in order to support my spine. That was the first time I heard of weightlifting. But weight training was too intimidating to me, I did peek into the weight room at our local conventional gym and decided that it was not for me. About 2-3 years later, my husband was experiencing some chest pain and ended up in the emergency room one day. After that emergency episode, we both decided it was time we prioritize our health. One day my husband came home and announced that he would start CrossFitting. He joined a local CrossFit gym and every time he came home from his morning class, he moaned and claimed that he was so sore he could barely walk or move. In desperation to keep him going I decided to give it a try…
How and when were you introduced to Behemoth?
[Christine] We started our CrossFit journey at a local box in Katy. After some time, we started questioning whether it was the right place for us. One day while having lunch with a friend, I bumped into an acquaintance from the local CrossFit box, she told me about Behemoth. She looked great and seemed to have fully recovered from her previous injury. I decided to check it out with a friend so we both went for the free trial class. I was really impressed how “hands on” their coaching was and their emphasis on warming up, cooling down and mobility. I signed up for six months right after the first class. Then my husband followed suite, well, we always work as a team.
[Richard] – see above – I go where she tells me to go…
[Christine] – Knowledge is power, my father once said to me. Since I joined Behemoth, my understanding of functional exercises has increased. I am fitter, stronger and much more knowledgeable than I have ever been with regards to fitness and nutrition. I have also learned an incredible amount about stretching and mobility. On most days I will stretch and work on my mobility after class for up to an hour.
[Richard] – I was shamed (by Leah) into doing Murph which I did with Christine last year. I would never have thought that we would be capable of doing it. Also I no longer fear wall balls.
Why Behemoth?
[Richard] – As compared to other boxes, Behemoth is focused on form and technique. After joining Behemoth, I realized that my form was off and had to re-learn all the barbell movements. It was awkward at first but now I feel that my technique has made the lifts easier.
[Christine] The coaches are always there for you and have a more ‘holistic’ approach. They are not only very knowledgeable about the human anatomy and nutrition but also emphasize sleep and other healthy habits.
What next?
[Christine]– I still have some hip impairment. I am working towards fixing it using stretching and Coach Aja’s guidance. My goal would be doing some handstand push ups in the future.
[Richard] – I am satisfied with maintaining where I am but I am sure that the coaches will push me out of my comfort zone.

I have always wanted to…
[Richard] – Go to Istanbul – I am a history nut.
[Christine] – Live on the beach
When I’m not crushing weights, my favorite thing to do is…
[Richard] – I do not eat donuts – FAKE NEWS !!
[Christine] – I love cooking, my routine is going to Behemoth in the morning and on my way back I would think of what I would cook for my family for dinner and shop for the ingredients. Cooking is a form of meditation to me, it’s calming, it’s creative. Apart from cooking, I love reading, Chinese Calligraphy, traveling and visiting exhibitions.
Favorite “application of fitness” outside of the gym is…
[Richard] – I can still remind James that I am bigger than he is.
[Christine] – Bicycling, hiking, golfing.
Favorite Pandora station…
[Christine] What’s that? Haha, I don’t use Pandora, but I love music. Queen is my favorite band, We Are the Champions, Under Pressure …
Beast mode engaged when this song comes on…
[Richard] – I Will Survive
[Christine] – Don’t need music – just the encouragement of coaches and my friends in the 9:30 class.

Mark B.
Mark is our I AM Behemoth for the month of January and kicks off 2017 by sharing his awesome journey! It has been awesome to watch Mark transform both mentally and physically since day one with us and we know that this is just the beginning for him! Overcoming some athletic and lifestyle speed bumps, Mark has now hit the ground running and continues to pave the way in un-tapping his potential!
Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself or something that would surprise us.
My name is Mark Bolin. American by birth, Texan by the grace of God, and born and raised in Houston. My fitness journey began in the 7th grade with an effort to join my junior high school basketball team. Sadly, it also ended in the 7th grade when I didn’t make the team. I did join the track team that year, but my consistency of getting last place every single race and the timing conflicts with choir practice, led me away from athletics. I was then given a guitar, which easily replaced athletics at that time in my life.
As an adult and living on my own, I had a great need to learn to cook. There are no cooks in my family and dinners got kind of rough, so I grew up on a lot of cereal and grilled cheeses. I decided I did not want to eat that anymore, so I taught myself to cook. I remember the first thing I decided to cook was shrimp creole. Hard lesson number 1 was when I mistook a whole bulb of garlic for a clove of garlic. WOW, don’t do that! I was sweating garlic for days! A few learning curves aside, cooking has been great fun in my life and therapeutic at times.
How and when were you introduced to Behemoth?
I was introduced to Behemoth by my wife, Andi, in 2014. I joined shortly thereafter in January 2015.
What are you most proud of, physically, mentally or both since beginning with us?
I am most proud of simply doing something physical, which ironically, was a mental feat for me. I had sat on my butt most of my life, with no real desire to get up and move around just for the sake of moving around. It has become clear, a sedentary life is not a healthy life.
Additionally, I’m mighty proud to say that as of August 21, 2016, I am a non-smoker. I had smoked a pack a day for nearly 20 years! 20 years! That’s just awful. I had assumed that starting at Behemoth with the running, jumping, sweating and what not, that quitting would just be automatic and even easy. But that was simply not the case for me. Quitting was a process. I failed several times. I learned from what I had read and from talking with others with addictions, that everyone is different and therefore, their particular process to change will be different. I found for me the process did not start with the exercising as I had initially thought. The exercising was absolutely there to help cope and to stay focused, but the process most definitely began and ended with an honest effort and an honest desire from myself to actually make the change and quit. And as hard, uncomfortable, and awkward as it was…I’m proud to say that battle is over and that I am a non-smoker! Thank you to my family, friends, and coaches for all being there along the way!
Why Behemoth?
Honestly, I originally got into CrossFit just to have a shared interest and activity with my wife. She had been doing CrossFit since before we even met. She had been convincing me to join her former box, but it never really appealed to me. Once she joined Behemoth, along with some of her friends, I’d overhear them discussing the differences between the gyms and it always came down the coaches and their techniques, approaches, and hands on training methods. I was very apprehensive to join as I wasn’t really comfortable with any of the movements I’ve heard them talk about….a burpee, a snatch, a Turkish get-up, and WTF is a man–maker??? It all sounded scary. But they were right, the coaches are all welcoming, understanding, and knowledgeable and made learning CrossFit entertaining and safe. I feel my fitness journey is just as much their own. And I know that they will be there, both for me and with me.
What next? What are you excited about pursuing here in the future?
Up next is food. I’m excited for 2017! I feel I’ve got the ‘get up and move’ aspect incorporated in my core lifestyle, so now it’s more than time to start focusing on the fuel.

Adam and Vickie S.
Meet the Schmidt family! Adam and Vickie as well as their daughters Maggie and Ella are the definition of a “fit family.” Whether it’s crushing workouts in the gym, a balanced and healthy lifestyle out of the gym, or teachable moments to be role models for their daughters, this duo has embraced what it means to find the heathiest, best versions of themselves as athletes and as leaders in their household!
Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself or something that would surprise us.
We both have careers in retail and met “on the job” at Foley’s Dept Store in 2000. Adam now works for Macy’s as a District Merchant and Vickie as a Buyer for Academy Sports+Outdoors. We’ve been married for 12 years and have lived in Houston, Miami, Dallas and then back to Houston 4 years ago. We have 7 year old twin daughters Ella and Maggie that love Behemoth almost as much as we do and you will see them at the box with us regularly!
Vickie has always enjoyed team sports and fitness and has been involved in everything from volleyball and softball to Pilates and running. After years of participating in 5k runs, she finally worked up to completing her first (and second) half marathon last year.
Adam was a swimmer throughout high school and has spent the past few years trying out different athletic endeavors. He has run 6 half marathons since 2009 and in 2014 completed his first triathalon and rode in the MS150.
How and when were you introduced to Behemoth?
A: I was looking for something to improve my running. I wasn’t sure if Crossfit would be a fit for me. So on a random day about a year ago I pulled into Behemoth to check it out. Leah and I chatted about Behemoth. Right away I could sense her passion for teaching and training CF fundamentals. I did an intro class with Aryan, met Aja and knew Behemoth was the place for me. I remember Aryan saying during my on boarding that running was ok but CF and strength training was superior. At the time I thought he was crazy but within 3 months of joining Behemoth running was a distant memory.
V: I had always wanted to try Crossfit but was always involved in other activities. After 6 months of Adam raving about Behemoth and seeing his results, I decided I had to give it a try and I haven’t looked back.
What are you most proud of, physically, mentally or both since beginning with us?
V: I wasn’t sure how much I could accomplish with Crossfit due to my back. I was diagnosed with scoliosis as a teenager and had surgery in 2002 in which the doctors put rods in my back to correct the curve, resulting in a complete 100% spinal fusion. In 2006 I had to have the surgery redone – rods removed, vertebra re-shaped and new rods installed. After the surgeries, I was hesitant to run too far or lift too much. In 2013 I decided I needed to get myself in better shape and started Pilates where I improved my flexibility and found a renewed passion for fitness. In 2014, after being a professional marathon spectator for 5 years, I decided I wanted to be the one out on the course. I trained for 9 months and ran my first half under my goal time of 2 hours, and beat that time in my 2nd race 2 months later. After all the running and Pilates, I felt like I could push myself to do more.
6 months ago, after hearing Adam rave about Behemoth and seeing his incredible results, I decided to give it a try. After my first session with Leah I was hooked. The time she spent going through all the movements and identifying modifications as needed gave me a great comfort level as I entered the group classes. I try to face each class and each movement with intensity and a mindset of doing my best. I’m also super proud of getting my Double Unders and my goal is to increase the number I can do unbroken. I am most proud of being an example of health and fitness for my daughters. We don’t talk “skinny” in our house…we talk strong and powerful!
A: I had zero experience with strength training before Behemoth. The amount of progress I have made with the awesome coaching and support is nothing short of amazing. I couldn’t do a pull up or push up before joining Behemoth. Now those are second nature. I’m adding a ton of muscle and most importantly I feel I’m in the best shape of my life.
Why Behemoth?
It’s an amazing community! Aja, Leah and Aryan all have a passion for teaching and the whole fam has been so welcoming! It is inspiring to workout alongside folks that are passionate about improving their health and pushing their limits.
What next? What are you excited about pursuing here in the future?
V: I have so far to go! I need to build strength and my goal is to be able to lift at RX weights.
A: This is just the beginning. Looking forward to continuing my fitness journey and conquering the elusive double under.

Richard F.
Meet Richard, our I AM Behemoth for the month of October! Richard rarely ever misses a class, always shows up early and ends up staying late to get in as much work as he can. In addition to his progress in the gym, his physical transformation due to bettering habits outside of the gym has been awesome to see. Learn more about him below:
Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself or something that would surprise us.
I’m Richard, or as Aja says Richaaaard. I was born in Ohio but raised in Clear Lake. I was in several sports including football, lacrosse, track and cross country. After high school I enlisted in the Navy. It was always easy to stay in shape while in the military, but after I left, I never changed my eating habits and stopped working out. Needless to say, I gained weight quickly. I tried to workout on my own, doing everything from gym memberships to P90X. None of it ever held and by the time I started Behemoth I was at a lifetime high of 300 lbs.
How and when were you introduced to Behemoth?
I first saw the sign about two years ago and checked it out online. I went to the free class, and almost threw up, Aja wanted me to get the full affect and asked me back the next weekend. Unfortunately the timing wasn’t right and I had to wait almost a year to be able to start up on a regular basis.
What are you most proud of, physically, mentally or both since beginning with us?
I am very proud of both my physical and mental improvements. The weight loss is a HUGE plus, but the ability to push through some of the tougher workouts has been absolutely wonderful.
Why Behemoth?
At first it was location, being the closest box to me. After my first few group classes I was quick to find out that this was a great find. The coaching staff is outstanding, and while THEY won’t tell you about their accomplishments, they are well documented, and it shows in their dedication to their gym, and members. As the months go by, the fellow Behemoths and Bshemoths make this a wonderful place to get fit.
What next? What are you excited about pursuing here in the future?
As most people know, I have been trying to get into shape to rejoin the military as an officer. I am currently waiting for word back, so I am working out and trying to stay out of trouble.

Keyla and Ish S.
Keyla and Ish are a strong duo that have made amazing progress in their time at Behemoth. Not only is Keyla a pro at baking and Ish the best brisket maker in town, but they have both committed and transformed themselves as athletes and taken on a healthy, active lifestyle both in and out of the gym.
Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself or something that would surprise us.
We are Keyla and Ismael (Ish). We were born and raised in Puerto Rico. We were introduced by mutual friends in high school and started dating. We’ve been married for 17 years and have two kids, Dayane who has started high school, and Omar who has started first grade. We’ve made Houston our home since 1999, but we always travel back to our hometown to spend Christmas with our family. Growing up we were always involved in sports (track and field, softball, volleyball, baseball, basketball), and we were very competitive. After we got married, things started to change; work, stress and bad eating habits ended in weight gain. We always tried to exercise but noticed that losing weight wasn’t as easy as it used to be when we were in our 20’s. For years we’ve been trying to figure out how to lose weight and be healthy but never cross through our minds that we could start to learn how to do it by doing CrossFit.
How and when were you introduced to Behemoth?
Keyla: Ish started talking to me about Behemoth but at that time I was too busy with work, and being a mom. Honestly, I didn’t think it was a fit for me; but he knows me well and assured me that I was going to like it. It wasn’t until a year had passed that I got tired and frustrated of going to the YMCA and seeing no result that I decided to give it a tried. I walk into Behemoth after a Saturday workout not even knowing how the coach looked and someone directed me to Aja. After completing my intro class, I was ready to join Behemoth.
Ish: Driving by and saw the sign outside (back when it was a single bay door box), I looked it up online and sent an email. Came in about 2 weeks after that for the intro class and I couldn’t even finish the warmup. That is when I realize in how out of shape I was. It took me a couple years to come back as I promised Aryan and Aja back then.
What are you most proud of, physically, mentally or both since beginning with us?
Keyla: I have to say that I am proud of both. Physically, I’m impressed of how fast I can recover immediately after a workout. I’m proud of my performance improvement and I’m starting to see the physical changes as well. Mentally, I’m no longer afraid of how tough the workout will be; I’m learning to think that if I try to do something I can, and if for any reason it is not possible at the moment that doesn’t discourage me to try it the next time.
Ish: I could say both but, for me the mental aspect has totally changed since I started here. I am doing new things that I didn’t think I could do, and that’s the most important part to me.
Why Behemoth?
Without knowing anything about Crossfit, it was all about the location and how close is to our house. The more engaged we got into the sport, the more we realized how lucky we are to have Behemoth in our neighborhood. At first, it was all about the location, then, became all about the coaching, and now is all about the Behemoth family.
What next? What are you excited about pursuing here in the future?
Keyla: I’m working towards improving the technique in my lifts and getting to do the workouts at the prescribed weight. Also, I’m excited to continue learning about nutrition to improve my quality of life, and continue getting healthier and stronger.
Ish: Continue working on my endurance and learning about this new lifestyle for us. Also, my goal is to do my first sprint triathlon at 40 years old.

Sergio F.
Meet Sergio, our I am Behemoth for the month of August! Sergio has made some huge strides of improvement in his health and fitness since he began his journey with Behemoth and it has been inspiring to watch him lead by example inside and outside of the gym.
Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself or something that would surprise us.
For the people who don’t know me, I’m Canadian born and raised, moved to Texas in 2008. Growing up throughout my school years, I was the overweight and out of shape, I hit 250lbs. In my last year of high school I decided to join, the military (yes…Canadian Army). I started working out and training to get into the army, lost 60lbs that summer through changing my eating and making fitness and health a priority in my life.
How and when were you introduced to Behemoth?
My girlfriend Kim introduced me to Behemoth, back in 2014. She raved about how much fun she had, so being a little skeptical I had to try it. I have not looked back since; I guess I liked the Kool-Aid too.
What are you most proud of, physically, mentally or both since beginning with us?
Wow, that is tough to narrow down. Most proud of physically would be my improved flexibility in my shoulders after having total re-constructive surgery in 2013 from years of training. Competing in the 2016 Open Master Scaled Division. Mentally, that would have to be getting past, my “I can’t mind set” when it came to jumping rope (double unders coming soon…) and other skilled movements (requiring balance, coordination or kipping).
Why Behemoth?
At first it had to be it was close to home and my girlfriend Kim was a member, but now it would have to be the coaching staff and the members.
What next? What are you excited about pursuing here in the future?
2018 Open Masters – with that said… Being able to do muscle up (strict/kip), handstand pushup (strict/kip) and stringing double unders together….

Mandy and Joe H.
Mandy and Joe Harris found love for each other while also sharing a love for the gym. These two have made healthy living and fitness a staple in their lives and we have been fortunate enough to watch their relationship and their fitness evolve to amazing things! Whether they are travelling to exotic places or here in Houston, they are always having fun, crushing goals and keeping themselves active! Read more about this awesome pair below:
Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself or something that would surprise us.
We are Mandy and Joe (Bear Claw) Harris!! We’ve been married for almost 4 years and are the proud parents of two four legged kiddos – Madison and Leonard. In the summer of 2011 we met and became friends at CrossFit West Houston. We started dating shortly thereafter and the rest is history. CrossFit has been an important part of our life together since the very beginning! Outside of work and CrossFit, we are avid travelers and pretty much spend the entire fall absorbed in college football (War Eagle and Hook ‘Em!).
How and when were you introduced to Behemoth?
Aja and Leah were actually two of our coaches at our former CrossFit gym many years ago! When Aja left to open Behemoth we wanted to go along with him, but we lived too far away and couldn’t make it work logistically. In January of 2014 we bought a house in Copperfield and soon discovered we were a short 3 miles from Behemoth! We were so excited to be back with Aja, Leah, and Aryan. There was no other gym for us and we’ve been active members ever since.
What are you most proud of, physically, mentally or both since beginning with us?
Mandy – Since joining Behemoth I have definitely gotten stronger physically and mentally. All of my lifts have not only improved in weight, but in technique. But I would say the biggest improvement has been in my gymnastic movements. I LOVE the fact that we take each movement as a progression, and because of that, I’m now able to string together several strict pull-ups, I am no longer doing modified pushups, and I’m closer to having a hand stand push up and toes to bar than I have ever been!
Joe – I have definitely grown physically being at Behemoth. My squats and my deadlifts have improved the most, but the most significant improvement has been in my mobility. With a focus on lift specific warm ups, cool downs, and the vast knowledge of the coaches, I have been become more mobile than ever before!! Better mobility will only lead to more improvements in my strength!
Why Behemoth?
2 reasons:
1. Simply, THE best coaching anywhere. Our coaches at Behemoth truly have the best interest of each member in their heart. Aja, Aryan, Leah, and Lee want us to not only succeed in the gym, but outside the gym as well. They are all there to answer our 1000’s of questions and will do anything in their power to help us all become the best we can be!
2. The Behemoth Family. Wow – what an amazing community. This is the most encouraging and positive group of people I have ever had the pleasure to be around. Being a part of this family is an honor and it’s one of the main reasons we love Behemoth so much. Often times we come to the 5pm class and don’t leave until after the 7pm has finished because just love being there with everyone!! It’s such a blessing to call all of these folks friends!!
What next? What are you excited about pursuing here in the future?
Mandy – Everything is exciting!! I’m excited about getting stronger every day. My focus right now is improving squat strength and technique (strong legs, strong body!) and to continue improving my gymnastics movements (kipping pullups, here I come!). And now that I’m an old lady of 40, hahaha, I just might go after some local Masters competitions just for fun!
Joe – I’m excited to improve my mental game and to work on expanding my gas tank. I’m looking forward to taking on challenges outside of the gym such as “old man” competitions and maybe some masters division Olympic lifting meets! I also have plans to apply my fitness outside of the gym by conquering some endurance races – maybe a Spartan or a BattleFrog!

My favorite lift (movement) is…
Mandy – power clean or anything overhead
Joe – front squat
My most frequent class I come to is…

Joe – climb Mt. Everest
When I’m not crushing weights, my favorite thing to do is…
Mandy – I love to plan all of our travels, spend time with my family, and shop for workout clothes I don’t need!
Joe – spin tall tales
Favorite “application of fitness” outside of the gym is…
We travel a lot and always try to incorporate some sort of fitness activity while we travel. We love to hike, snow ski, and climb mountains – we’re conquering our first 14’er in August! After that, our next big adventure is to hike, bike and raft our way across Costa Rica from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean!

Bryan F.
Bryan is our IAM Behemoth for the month of May. Bryan has been with us for some time and he is constantly getting fitter and attacking new goals. You’ll find him getting to the gym early to get in his extra work, or staying late so that he can do everything in his power to accomplish his goals. Read more about his story below!
Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself or something that would surprise us.
I have been married for 25 years with 2 adult kids. Grew up in Manhattan, Kansas (Go Cats), transplanted to San Diego (Marines) and Chicago (work) for several years. I enjoy woodworking, bicycling, and messing in the yard at home.
How and when were you introduced to Behemoth?
I had been looking into CrossFit for about 2 years when I was doing ultra-running and cycling to work on base strength, but I did not have any boxes close to me in Chicago that would be convenient. I was looking for something that would interest my daughter Mackenzie (13 at the time), and we could do it together. When we relocated to Houston, I decided it was time, and Behemoth was just down the street. Turned out to be one of the best decisions I have ever made!
What are you most proud of, physically, mentally or both since beginning with us?
Getting my mental game back is what I am most proud of. I have always been a workout ‘grinder’, but CrossFit has taken me way out of my comfort zone. It has made big impacts to how I treat my body, what I put into it, and how to manage outside stress. My mobility is so much better, I have never been stronger, and overall work capacity is better than when I was 30.
Why Behemoth?
I really am thankful that Behemoth allowed Mackenzie to join me on this journey. I knew that CrossFit was something that I would enjoy, but it was about having something to do with Mac that has kept us around. I am more proud of her growth than my own (typical dad). I could not have made this journey without the support of the Behemoth coaches and family along the way.
What next? What are you excited about pursuing here in the future?
Skill work and engine building! I have several PR milestones planned in 2016. Long- term goals would be to qualify for the USA Weightlifting American Masters or the National Masters Championships. I would also like to complete some 12hr and 24hr adventure and cycling races in the next 18-24 months and put my fitness to the test.

Read more about John below!
-Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself or something that would surprise us.
I have been married to my wonderful wife for 35 years (she saved me!), and we are blessed with two fine adult children. No grandchildren, yet, but we can always hope and pray. “Faith, Family, and Friends First” is a favorite expression of mine. Something surprising… during my High School years I was a bit of a head banging KISS freak. Watch the movie “Dazed and Confused”...I think they wrote it about my friends and I!
–How and when were you introduced to Behemoth?
The Box I originally started at was closing, and the Owner suggested Behemoth because he thought I would be a “good fit”. I did a drop in, and was hooked.
–What are you most proud of, physically, mentally or both since beginning with us?
I feel I have technically improved a great deal with my lifts, and I have had numerous PR’s. I could not have done it without the great coaching.
-Why Behemoth?
I enjoy all of the athletes I have met (hope to meet more), and I cannot say enough about the coaching we receive…It is second to none….Second to none!
-What next? What are you excited about pursuing here in the future?

Jennifer and JJ H.
-Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself or something that would surprise us.
Jennifer- I grew up north of Houston in Willis, TX and attended Texas A&M. JJ and I have been married for almost 10 years and we have one son, Dylan, who is 7. I’ve worked in the hospitality industry for almost 15 years, and I am currently the Membership Director for a private country club in Houston.
JJ- I was born in Mexico City and I love Texas country music. I work as a production coordinator for a large lighting manufacturer.
-How and when were you introduced to Behemoth?
Jennifer- I had been taking a local boot camp class for a couple of years when I found myself wanting to get more out of my workouts. I had always been intrigued by CrossFit, but also found it extremely intimidating. In early 2015 I decided push myself out of my comfort zone and started searching for CrossFit gyms in the area. Behemoth stood out right away. The reviews were great, and after stalking the website for a while (and reading every single “I AM”…) I signed up for the free introductory class. I was so nervous driving in the first day, but I survived, and really enjoyed Aryan’s coaching style. I completed the on-ramp in late March and have been taking class 3-5 days a week since.
JJ- By my wife. Right after she joined, she talked about how much she enjoyed the classes, how the coaches were really focused on progress, how there was big camaraderie amongst everybody, and how everyone pushed each other to do better. She convinced me to come watch a workout and see what I thought. I had been doing some conditioning work at my brother’s gym, but that was only 2 times per week. I needed something closer to home and more days out of the week.
-What are you most proud of, physically, mentally or both since beginning with us?
Jennifer- I am absolutely physically stronger than when I started. But, I think what I am most proud of is that JJ and I have found something that we can do together and that Dylan gets to see us do it. I am proud of the example we are setting for him.
JJ- The changes to my body and having lost some weight. Since I’m a diabetic and I have high cholesterol, my doctor keeps getting on to me about the weight loss.
-Why Behemoth?
Jennifer- Hands down…because of the coaches. I remember coming home after the intro. class and telling JJ that Aryan had shown me a push-up modification that made so much sense. I’d never had someone care to help me move beyond my wide armed knee push-ups before. The coaches at Behemoth are all genuinely invested in helping each of us improve. Whether its correction to your form, encouraging you to push yourself, or tips on how to reign in your diet or reduce your stress, I always feel like I get personalized attention even in a group setting.
JJ- Jennifer had been thinking about joining a CrossFit gym for a while, and she does a lot of research before she makes a decision. She had heard great things about the gym and about the coaches.
-What next? What are you excited about pursuing here in the future?
Jennifer- I’m looking forward to getting a handle on nutrition this year and continuing to push outside of my comfort zone. Finally conquering some real push-up wouldn’t be so bad either!
JJ- I just want to keep improving. I am looking forward in the not so distant future to be able to get off the cholesterol and diabetes medication.

Graham and Jennifer M.
-Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself or something that would surprise us.
G – I grew up with sports, loving BMX at a competitive level and Skateboarding. I have since translated this in to Mountain biking / Cycling and Snowboarding. I have spent the last 20 years working in the oil and gas industry which has allowed me to travel to many destinations around the world, from Africa, Australia, China, Malaysia to South America and of course good old Texas. I have been living in Texas since 2009.
J – I am a native Houstonian, but have travelled the world. In 2008 – 2009, I racked up 100,000 miles each year travelling for work.
-How and when were you introduced to Behemoth?
G – Since living in Texas since 2009, I was living to what I thought was the good life, living on loaded nachos, chicken wings and of course beer. Finally I said enough is enough, I need to do something to break the habit. I got back into cycling again and took on the mammoth BP MS 150 back in 2011 – that was a fun ride. I continued to cycle but was still looking for more!!! Beauty in strength (4 girls with makeup on talking about crossfit and throwing weights around) got me introduced to Crossfit back in 2013. I started working out on my own, telling myself I would join a box January 2014, then I started looking around at CrossFit locations in my area.
J – Graham introduced me to Behemoth almost 2 years ago. I was afraid to join while I was pregnant…….
-What are you most proud of, physically, mentally or both since beginning with us?
G – Physically, my speed and agility performance, who knew I could sprint round the building circa 400m in under a minute? My favorite part of the day is when we are put to the test. Mentally, having the drive to push through the things I hate most. All I need to do now is pick up heavy shit faster after being chased for a mile by a Rottweiler.
J – Mind over matter. I am amazed at how natural the skills can be with the right coaches and practice. The flow of lifting a bar is just so natural.
-Why Behemoth?
G – I can see my house from here!!! I remember going to my first on ramp class on that cold dark winter evening, running home telling Jennifer pulling up YouTube, “Jennifer quick look it’s the boy from the telly that coaches at Behemoth.” Seriously though, primarily the coaches and coaching styles – the attention to detail that the coaches can give to each and every one of us in the class, you think they are not watching but they are. You are never left to your own devices. Behemoth has kept me injury free since starting CrossFit.
J – Because there is no other box out there that makes you feel like family while kicking your ass at the same time, and like family they will keep pushing because they know you can do it!
-What next? What are you excited about pursuing here in the future?
G – I really enjoy the continued advancement of Behemoth constantly evolving keeping up with what fitness is now, but also being strides ahead of the current times. I see myself being a big part of the future at Behemoth.
J – Increase my agility and pace with running and assault bike. And to not bruise myself leg every time I hop on and off the bike!!!!!
“3, 2, 1…Go” Mad Lib section
-My favorite lift (movement) is…
G – You know that one lift out of every 10 or so!?!? When you look at the bar, compose yourself, kick your heels, walk up to the bar, take a deep breath, and all of a sudden the bar is on your front rack, and you go WOW that felt so good! If I was to narrow it down I would say any lift with a Clean in it. To add my other favorite that we all love to hate is not a lift but the assault bike.
J – Back Squat
-My most frequent class I come to is…
G – 9.30AM and 5PM classes, so if you want to partner up one day….
J – 5PM
-I have always wanted to…
G – Shoulder press my wife
J – Have Graham push press me over his head
-When I’m not crushing weights, my favorite thing to do is…
G – Be with family, and when I get a chance I love to DIY, if you are looking for me I am either at the Gym or at Home Depot
J – Family time with my amazing husband and our future Baby-SHEmoth Maisie
-Favorite “application of fitness” outside of the gym is…
G – Crawling around with Maisie my 14 month old Daughter
J – Energy and stamina to keep up with a 1 year old
-Favorite Pandora station…
G – 80s pop radio, I am actually listening to ‘Love Is A Battlefield’ as I write this, and/or anything British… AND I finished this with ’99 Red Balloon’s.’
J – 90’s Rap

My name is Bo, during the day I work as a Consultant/Project Manager for a Super Major in the Energy Corridor. I love to cook (clean food only, not junk food), workout, and spend time with friends and family. In case you didn’t know, I am a HUGE Dallas Cowboy’s fan, till death do us part!
-How and when were you introduced to Behemoth?
Dr. Canada (Canada Chiropractic) actually planted the seed during a consultation visit sometime in May 2014. He kept rambling about how awesome Behemoth was LOL.
-What are you most proud of, physically, mentally or both since beginning with us?
Well, I am in the best shape of my life. Since I started I have gone from 18.00% body fat to 13.00% and counting (at one point I was at 29.30%…Crazy, I know). Although I have drastically changed my diet, the good folks/coaches over at Behemoth push me daily to get the most out of me. In other words, they kick my butt, hard.
-Why Behemoth?
The people, I just love it.
-What next? What are you excited about pursuing here in the future?
Single digit body fat percentage, having six pack and being extremely fit at 40 is a big goal for me.

The Schmitt Family
Our I AM Behemoth/BSHEmoth(‘s) for the month of August is none other than the ENTIRE Schmitt family! It has been amazing to see an entire family of four show up, motivate each other and do work on a consistent basis here at Behemoth. They are always positive, making progress and looking towards their next goals both in and out of the gym. Check out this video below to learn more about them!

Leslie and Ryan O.
We are excited to introduce to you Ryan and Leslie Owens. This power couple has picked up so much momentum since beginning with Behemoth, and you can almost always find them both, together, pushing each other through every workout! Read below to learn more:
-Who are you?
RYAN: I am Ryan Owens and I am a musician (Robbie Seay Band), business owner (Rhythm Room Rehearsal Studio), husband and father. My wife Leslie and I have 3 crazy kids and an even crazier dog.
I enjoy playing music, running and working with my hands and power tools!
www.robbieseayband.com
LESLIE: I am Leslie Owens and I am a stay at home mom to 3 amazing kids…Everett (12)…..Avery (9)…..and Levi (5). I am married to Ryan Owens. We have been married for almost 14 years, since September 8.2001. Ryan and I were high school sweethearts (he was 17 and I was 15). We have known each other over half of our lives…..crazy!
–How and when were you introduced to Behemoth?
RYAN: The summer of 2013 I just needed to do something different to get in shape. I had never lifted weights before and honestly was nervous about trying. I had always run and done triathlon type events to stay in shape. I love competition with myself but needed something different. I looked into CrossFit places in my area and Behemoth came up. When I looked into it and saw that Aja and Leah were actually at the ESPN CrossFit games the very week I was looking for a box I figured that they must be the best place in town. I got in touch with Aryan and signed up for the on ramp program and have loved it ever since.
LESLIE: I actually knew about Behemoth way before I decided to join. Ryan decided to research some of the CrossFit places around us and came across Behemoth. He tried it and joined and had nothing but great things to say about Aja and Aryan. I knew then that if and when I decided to try it out that it would definitely be with Behemoth. Before I started here I was going to the YMCA. I love going to classes but the instructors were always coming and going and it was never consistent. I decided that when my kids were all in school that it was time for me to step out of my comfort zone and so that is when I joined and began the on ramp in August 2014. I have to say that i have grown to love it every time I go.
–What are you most proud of, physically, mentally or both since beginning with us?
RYAN: I was so nervous when I first started. I literally had never touched a barbell! I am very thankful that Aryan and Aja took the time to slowly make sure that we learned everything correctly. Since then I have really enjoyed seeing my weights increase and my body feel stronger. I actually did a half marathon a few weeks ago without specifically training for it and surprised myself with a great pace of 7:39! That is 100% from CrossFit and better than I would have done when I was just running.
LESLIE: I would have to say that what I am most proud of is my ability to step outside of my comfort zone and try something new. I am a creature of habit so when I decided to try CrossFit, I was extremely apprehensive and nervous. I am so glad that I took that leap of faith because it has all been worth it! I am still new at it all so I am still learning. I will say though that I have surprised myself in that I can do hard things. I feel stronger in my back and arms and overall strength. I also feel like it is my duty to be a role model for my kids and if they see me trying hard things and achieving goals that I set out to make then I am teaching them that they can do the same. I still have a long way to go in getting to where I want to be in my crossfit journey but I feel like I am off to a good start ; )
–Why Behemoth?
RYAN: I am at Behemoth 100% because of the coaches. From when I started and we were in the tinny one garage space, to when we opened up a wall and finally had a little more room to the now huge facility….. It has always been the coaches and the fellow classmates that make it what it is. A great environment where we can push ourselves while still training smart.
LESLIE: It was a no brainer for me since Ryan had been going for about a year already and absolutely loved it. I got lucky in that I am starting out my crossfit experience with amazing coaches. I could tell from my first on ramp with Aryan that I was in the right place. They really know their stuff and are passionate about it. I feel like they really take the time to show you the right way to lift and they are genuinely concerned about your well being.
–What next? What are you excited about pursuing here in the future?
RYAN: I love that Leslie and I now get to go to classes together. She has really surprised me with her willingness to give CrossFit a try and I love getting to experience that with her several times a week. I just want to continue progressing, get more comfortable with the gymnastic type movements and improve my flexibility.
LESLIE: Well, since I am a newbie at all of this, I think that what I am most excited about is just growing stronger, leaner, and more confident in myself. I am excited about pushing myself and allowing myself to excel.
Oh and I would eventually like to whip out a ton of double unders ; )

–When I’m not crushing weights, my favorite thing to do is… RYAN: Attend my kids sporting events…. even though it is extremely stressful for me 🙂 LESLIE: Is spend time with my husband and kids. Life goes by too fast not to really enjoy your loved ones. I try and soak in every second I have with my kids because I know they won’t be little for long.
Some of the hobbies I enjoy are taking pictures of my kids and I am sort of crafty; ) I like making things for our home and doing building projects with Ryan.
–Favorite “application of fitness” outside of the gym is… RYAN: Being strong for my kids. Being able to help them and participate in whatever they throw at me is fun. LESLIE: Running…..while I am not super awesome at it…..it still feels good to have that alone time.

Marilyn and Les D.
Our I AM Behemoth AND BSHEmoth of the month is Marilyn and Les Dalenberg. These two are hard to feature without making them a package deal because while they each are independently awesome, they are beyond inspiring together! Read a little more about them here!
–Who are you?
We are here for the winter months from Minnesota. Marilyn was a high school math teacher and Les was in medical capital equipment sales. You probably would be surprised that Les is a sculptor and does other artistic things. We have a little white, rough coat Jack Russell Terrier, Molly.
-How and when were you introduced to Behemoth?
We were here last winter and went to Cannon Crossfit where Leah was the coach so we had met Aja and knew about Behemoth. We bought a house this past summer in Jersey Village and when Leah announced she was coming to Behemoth—then so were we.
–What are you most proud of, physically, mentally or both since beginning with us?
We both feel that we have learned so much at Behemoth. We have done Crossfit for two years, but in a different environment. We even took the On Ramp program with Aryan to hone some of the basics. We are both much stronger in the short time we’ve been here with the varied workouts and the fabulous warm-ups, I (Marilyn) even got my FIRST pull up!!
–Why Behemoth?
After going to multiple boxes, we have seen various styles of coaching, programming, and environments. The warm-ups are made to order for what we are doing, the coaches are engaged (no texting and side conversations) and help during the entire class. The required cool down helps in recovery. All of the coaches care about progress, safety, and about you as a person. If this is the only gym you have ever been to, you have no idea the smart decision you made in joining Behemoth!!!
–What next? What are you excited about pursuing here in the future?
Marilyn–I want to get stronger, of course, but I need to work on my conditioning so I have more go power. Leah is helping me with some glute weakness that has caused some pain so I am hoping to conquer that also.
Les — I want to continue to grow healthier with the Paleo lifestyle, maintain my muscle tone, and increase my strength. I also want to make sure I am doing the lifts correctly.

We both enjoy time with our granddaughter, Rebekah, and of course, her parents.

Cam H.
Cam Hewitt is our spotlight athlete for the last part of September. Take a read below to find out a little bit more about this Behemoth!
-Who are you Cam Hewitt? Tell us a little about yourself or something that would surprise people.
I’m a 33 year old husband to fellow Bshemoth Dawn, and stepfather to my 3 amazing kids John-15, Lexi-14, and Ian-13. A former smoker, and always the skinny kid growing up, I tried my best to expand my horizons after high school and college. As life unfolded, I discovered many fun life experiences, such as fire spinning and art scooters, but never could find a way to get fit the way I had always envisioned.
-How and when were you introduced to Behemoth?
In July of 2013 I made a commitment to find a box that fit me. I had tried an intro workout before, and tried a box by my work in the Sugar Land area. Behemoth was close to home and after driving down FM 529 and seeing the sign, I decided to drop in for an intro class. A couple phone calls, and emails, and I was hooked! I had no idea then, the amazing impact it would have on me.
-What are you most proud of, physically, mentally or both since beginning with us?
Physically – I can FINALLY complete pull-ups! I could never do them as a kid or adult, and now I can string together 9 chin-ups, and working on more.
Mentally – It can be tough to start any day with the right attitude or positive mindset, but on the days that I come in, I am more productive and feel more accomplished. Starting the day off lifting something heavy just seems to get me motivated to take on the world.
-Why Behemoth?
After my intro class, and discussions with the coaches, I felt home at the box and saw how different it was from other places I had tried. It was then that I knew I had a real chance to succeed in my long and short term fitness goals.
-What next? What are you excited about pursuing here in the future?
I have all intentions of attending a competition in the future. Now that I’ve reached a fitness level previously never achieved, I want to have fun with the CF Open or a local competition. I’m excited at the chance to pass CF on to my kids soon. I’m hoping they all take an interest, like their mother and I have.

Cody A.
Cody Attebery is our spotlight member of the month. Take a read below to get to know him better!
-Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself or something that would surprise us.
I was born and raised in Houston, TX. and graduated from Cypress Springs High school in 2006. I was in an accident where I lost my left eye and it changed my life forever. I went to Lone Star College and Sam Houston State to get a Degree in Education and I currently work at Academy in the Loss Prevention department.
-How and when were you introduced to Behemoth?
I live very close to the gym and one day as I was driving home I saw some people working out and wondered what they were doing. After checking out the website and asking Aja and Aryan a few questions, I quickly enrolled into the intro class, did the On-Ramp classes and never looked back!
-What are you most proud of, physically, mentally or both since beginning with us?
What I am most proud of physically is that I have gone from weighing 285lbs to 245lbs and still going down! I am also happy that my running has improved, when I first started I could barley run 400 meters. Since I have been at Behemoth my eating habits and what I put into my body has changed a lot due to the help of Aryan and Aja. What I am most proud of mentally is that the word “CAN’T” is no longer in my vocabulary. When I go to that dark place where my body and mind are telling me to quit, I have the strength now to tell myself to keeping pushing and to never give up.
-Why Behemoth?
Two words: Aja and Aryan. The knowledge that these two men have is out of this world and the time and dedication that they put into helping each Behemoth and Bshemoth get better and stronger is just amazing. I am grateful to have 4 awesome coaches (Leah and Lee included). Also, the support of the Behemoth Community is just awesome and without them and the accountability they give me, I wouldn’t have seen the results that I have since I started. Joining Behemoth is one of the best decisions I have ever made.
-What next? What are you excited about pursuing here in the future?
I still struggle with food, so having that support from the Behemoth community and my coaches will help a lot. Also, working on my squat position and working on my form and technique on power cleans and power snatch.

Matt O.
We are proud to introduce Matt O. as our I am Behemoth for the month of May! Matt shows up, works hard and fills the room with his positive attitude. He has made great progress in the gym and inspires other’s to do the same!
-Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself or something that would surprise us.
I work in Oil and Gas and have been in Houston most of my life. I seek wisdom and truth through my faith in God. I was a lifeguard for 7 years and met my beautiful wife who is my inspiration and motivation doing that. I graduated from Texas A&M in 2010, WHOOOP! My fellow Aggie wife and I currently live in Katy and spoil our 2 yr. old Great Dane, Pepper, as much as we can. I’m a golfaholic and also enjoy drawing and graphic design very much.
-How and when were you introduced to Behemoth?
A fellow Behemoth buddy and I were working out at a local gym and it just got boring and repetitious after a while. He was the one to suggest that we give CrossFit a try and we came to find that we were extremely fortunate to both live near Behemoth. We signed up in April 2014 and I’ve never looked back!
-What are you most proud of, physically, mentally or both since beginning with us?
Physically, I’ve noticed a change in my body that I can lift heavier in the gym, my stamina has increased in my everyday life and my clothes fit better! Mentally, I’ve got the drive everyday to make it to my workout at the end of the day despite an hour commute on a good day. That pushes me throughout the day to accomplish whatever I need to in order to make that happen and that creates a ripple effect. I have to make sure I’m accomplishing my work by a certain time so I can make it to the gym. In turn, I try to be more efficient during the day, which increases my focus. I choose not to do certain things Friday nights that might stop me from being there Saturday mornings. Overall, I’m proud that since being with Behemoth, I’ve gained a stronger sense of discipline and focus. I’m still not disciplined enough to turn down Taco Bell though!
-Why Behemoth?
The community that I’ve come to be apart of, the ever changing workouts, the sense of accomplishment after the tough workouts and the understanding and ease of mind that I’m accomplishing these things in a safe, organized and fun environment. All coaches here focus on form over everything and are constantly vigilant about being smart when it comes to working out and gaining progress.
-What next? What are you excited about pursuing here in the future?
After competing in my first team competition recently and smashing-it-up! – I think the next step, is to go for another and maybe an individual comp to see how I stack up against others as an individual. But the team comp. was so fun and rewarding that I’m very excited to do another with fellow Behemoths!

Kevin I.
Kevin Iglesias is our spotlight athlete for November. Take a read below to find out a little bit more about this Behemoth!
-Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself or something that would surprise us.
I’m 16 years old, I have an older brother and sister. I am originally from Lake Jackson, Texas. When I was 7 years old I moved to Houston Texas and I’ve lived here since then. When I was younger, I was overweight and didn’t really have much self-confidence; I wouldn’t even want to go to the pool or the beach because I was afraid of taking my shirt off. I was always that one little fat kid in class and some people would even pick on me and say I was getting overweight! I wanted to make a difference in my life so I found Behemoth CrossFit. I don’t regret joining at all because it has made a big difference for me, it has not only changed my physical appearance but I am mentally stronger as well.
-How and when were you introduced to Behemoth?
I heard about Behemoth from my brother Christian. My journey to fitness at Behemoth started when I was 15, it’s been over a year now working out and training hard.
-What are you most proud of, physically, mentally or both since beginning with us?
Behemoth has changed me a lot in many ways, both physically and mentally. The way it has changed me the most physically is my overall strength. I can now do more than 5 strict pull-ups and when I started I had none. It has really built up a lot of endurance when it comes to running and swimming, which I enjoy doing outside of the gym. I feel a lot better and more energized now doing these things, I definitely don’t get as tired as I did before. I have lost a lot of weight and I have also converted that weight to muscles! Oh, and one thing is, I actually have BICEPS now!! lol
The way it has changed me mentally is that I no longer have the mindset of giving up or saying to myself “I can’t do it”. Even if I am on the verge of stopping I don’t let that happen, I push my self to the max. “Quitting” is no longer in my vocabulary. I always strive to be the best at any workout that comes my way.
-Why Behemoth?
The reason I chose Behemoth is because they always treat you like a family no matter who you are or how old you are. People in the box are like family, they always push and motivate each other and there’s no hate between anyone. Behemoth also has disciplined me to sign up three hours before class time or else I get penalized with 30 burpees. There was a time I would never sign up, so every day I would have to do burpees. It has gotten to the point that burpees and I have a love/ hate relationship. That’s why I am known as the BURPEE guy!
-What next? What are you excited about pursuing here in the future?
Something that I want to pursue in the future is being in the CrossFit Games and competing against Aja Barto! I also want to have a leaner body and be the best athlete I can be in every sport I choose to play. I am excited to see more results in my body and also to be able to lift with the BIG BOYS!

Travis R.
Travis Raine is our spotlight athlete for the last part of August. Take a read below to find out a little bit more about this Behemoth!
-Who are you Travis Raine? Tell us a little about yourself or something that would surprise people.
I was born and raised in south Louisiana where I met my eventual wife. I went to Texas A&M to study engineering and join the university ROTC program, the Corps of Cadets and the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band. My last year in the Corps I was privileged to be selected as one of the Drum Majors leading 300 plus bands men and women during halftime performances in front of 85,000 people each week. I also had the opportunity to lead the band through a Presidential Inaugural parade in Washington DC. My last year at a Texas A&M I became a member of the collegiate paintball team, acting as the Maroon Team captain in murmurous tournaments including the national championship tournament competing against other university teams from around the country. After graduating, I married my high school sweetheart on a cruise in the Caribbean Sea. Since then I have become a family man enjoying every moment I spend with my lovely wife and two amazing children, Caden and Harper Jo. I love challenges and competing. I work hard and always want more… Crossfit has become a real passion for me and my family. I love where I am in life and can’t wait to see where this journey goes.
-How and when were you introduced to Behemoth?
My lovely wife, Dani, and I started Crossfit with a personal trainer but we were ready to make a change to a group setting and experience the community that is Crossfit. I owe my involvement with Behemoth to my wife who did a tremendous amount of research looking into local boxes. We joined February ’14 (almost 7 months now).
-What are you most proud of, physically, mentally or both since beginning with us?
I have seen tremendous change over the last few months. I now know I have the strength to sprint after my kids if they get themselves in a dangerous or harmful situation. I have the mental toughness to push through a workout I would have once thought completely impossible for me to even start. The same confidence in my workouts has transferred to my work and home life completing tasks with a new found inner strength. Physically, I’ve become stronger and leaner. At 32, I’m in the best shape of my life.
I have so many things I am proud of since joining Behemoth from learning about nutrition to support a healthy lifestyle and fuel my workouts to gaining 22 pounds while dropping two pant sizes. Growing up I never lifted weights, and to see myself doing Olympic style lifts now is such an exciting achievement. To have the strength to not only do one strict pull up, but 10 unbroken is just awesome. The coordination to finally string 10 unbroken double unders together is such a rewarding personal achievement.
-Why Behemoth?
Dani and I did not want to go blindly joining any box, so we educated ourselves on what to look for. We looked into two boxes, the first was okay but we just didn’t have that feeling of belonging… just felt like a dollar sign to the coaches. The second box was Behemoth, and after the intro class we both got in the car and said this was the place for us. We felt right then and there the coaches not only knew what they were talking about, but they were able to articulate that knowledge into easy to understand instructions and most importantly, it was obvious the coaches cared about us. We got all of this in the hour long intro class… just an amazing first impression that has not changed.
-What next? What are you excited about pursuing here in the future?
I am looking forward to continuing to build on my accomplishments, lifting more and improving my endurance. I would like to consistently be able to perform workouts at the prescribed weight. I’m also really looking forward to learning more gymnastic movements. I’d also love to challenge myself to participate in local competitions.
